The History of Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade

The Newport Beach Boat Parade started in 1907 when Italian gondolier John Scarpa took visitors from Pasadena across the bay in a gondola decorated with Japanese lanterns.
🚤
A year later Scarpa along with 8 fellow small boat operators put together the first loosely organized parade all illuminated by the Japanese lanterns.
Back then the parade would consist of canoes and Scarpas gondola, blissfully unaware of the wonderful tradition in the making.

In 1913 the first judged parade was held, where prices were given out to best decorated and most spectacularly lit.

Today the Boat Parade features as many as 200+ entrants that are competing in different categories (sweepstakes best overall, best non-commercial, best powerboat, best sailboat, best boat under 30” etc)

But the Parade is also about the houses along the Harbor beautifully decorated with light and the musicians playing live music on the boats and along the harbor.

Family owned and made in America, 🇺🇸 the very first electric Duffy boat was created in 1967 when Marshall "Duffy" Duffield placed a motor from a secondhand golf cart into the hull of a beat-up motorboat. Who would have thought that would become the prototype for #DuffyElectricBoats!
Despite being told the batteries would only last a few miles due to drag in the water, currents, and wind, the Duffy Electric Boat exceeded everyone`s expectations!
